Advantage of Keeping Track of Your Tutoring Lessons

When you first begin as a tutor, you might focus entirely on the lessons. As you start working with students, you are making sure that your focus is in the moment, as you want to make sure that the student is following along. But once you start to gain more experience, you can start getting a little more complex in how you interact with students. Once you are able to pull back a little bit, you can start making tutoring strategy for students and build on the sessions.

  • Tutoring and its progress

It is a great idea to start keeping a journal that you update before and after your sessions. You can use it to track the progress during each lesson. For example, you can use it to provide yourself a structure and keep track of the examples you use. If you are more committed, you can take note of how the student specifically reacts to each type of example, giving you insights into which subjects are important to focus on and which ones you can move past. When new grades come in, it is a good idea to ask your student to share those with you so you can see the tutoring progress as you go.

  • Concept of learning

The best tutors are able to go beyond just teaching you the concepts. The match between tutor and student is just as important to the process as getting a tutor who knows the concepts. Without a good relationship, your student might not engage with the concepts, so all of the hard work that you put in disappears.

By keeping detailed notes of your sessions, you are able to schedule things for the future more efficiently. Instead of wasting both your and your students’ time on concepts that you do not need or things already covered in class or in the past, you can stay on top of all of the aspects of your students’ tutoring. In the past, we have found that the best tutors go above and beyond the call of duty to help their students.

  • Tutoring strategy for students

Beyond just making sure you know the concepts that your student needs to learn, you can work on a few things before you become a tutor. For example, setting an agenda for the session in advance will give you a leg up and show your professionalism. Another quality of a good tutor is a good sense of humor. You do not need to go get your own joke tutoring if you do not have a natural charm, but you might want to go to a couple of comedy shows to see how a relaxed comedian uses laughter to connect with an audience.

Listening to your students is very important so you might gain a lot as a tutor by asking a friend to tell you their problems and practicing active listening. You want to find ways to take your ego out of it, so your student’s experience is free of your biases. When you become a tutor, whether, in Math, Science, English, or anything else, the key to remember is that the relationship comes before everything, but you have all of the resources to make sure that the relationship is as strong as can be.
